Lt. Col. Donald J. Peterson portraitLt. Col.  Donald J. Peterson came to the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies in May 2014 as College Operations Officer. A native of Battle Ground, Indiana, he entered military service in 1983 as an Enlisted Soldier. He was later commissioned as a Second Lieutenant upon graduation from Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia in 1990. His military education includes Infantry Officer Basic Course, Infantry Officer Advanced Course, Combined Arms & Services Staff School, and Command and General Staff College. He is also a graduate of several specialty courses which include: Inspector General Course, Recruiting Officer Course, Mortar Leaders Course, and
most recently the Defense Institute of Security Assistance Management Security Cooperation Officer Course. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Systems from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana.

His experience in the Asia-Pacific region includes service as an Operations Officer for the 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks from 2009 to 2011 and an operational tour in the Southern Philippines assigned to Joint Special Operations Task Force – Philippines (JSOTF-P) in 2012. As an experienced Infantry Officer, Lt. Col. Peterson has served in numerous major campaigns and operations during his career, including Operations JOINT FORGE, ENDURING FREEDOM-PHILIPPINES, IRAQI FREEDOM and NEW DAWN. Other military experience includes overseas assignments in Germany, Saudi Arabia and various assignments within the continental United States.

His awards and decorations include, Bronze Star for merit, Meritorious Service Medal with 1 device, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 4 devices, Army Achievement Medal with 1 device, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Armed Force Expeditionary Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, NATO medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Air Assault Badge and various other awards.
