The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation: A Tenable Provider of Security in Post-2014 Central Asia?

Can the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) service as a security provider in post-2014 Central Asia? In this article, Dr. Jeffrey Reeves discusses whether, and to what degree, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) can fill this role. His article accomplishes this by contrasting the SCO’s strengths and weaknesses against potential (and probable) insecurity in the Central Asian region following the International Security Assistance Forces’ (ISAF) planned withdrawal of the majority of its troops by the end of 2014. The article concludes with policy suggestions for the SCO’s further development that could augment its weaknesses and make the organization a more formidable security actor.
