Director’s Vector: Well Centered

On February 25, 2012, in Director's Vector, by APCSS Director

The placement of APCSS in Honolulu, Hawaii was far from accidental. As Asian and Pacific as the United States gets, Hawaii is also home to U.S. Pacific Command and all of the service (Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine) component commands. Special Operations Command – Pacific is right here as well, giving a great center of mass for the military side of national security practice.

Other U.S. government organizations, non-governmental partners, and commercial interests are easily accessible in Honolulu as well, making this an ideal place to bring our fellows together to address a wide range of issues and benefit from a very broad spectrum of perspectives.

Another reason we are well-centered in Hawaii is, well, the other centers that are based here. The East-West Center (, the Center for Excellence in Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance (, and the Pacific Disaster Center (;jsessionid=C96DD23823B677C21C7E68B5B32D9BD5) are key APCSS partners in a variety of activities. I spent the morning Thursday at PDC with Ray Shirkhodai (executive director) and his team, and was very impressed with the innovative work they are doing. I look forward to connecting with the East-West and COE teams soon, and then sharing some thoughts on the value and opportunities of the relationship between our centers.
