Jakarta, Indonesia – Disaster management specialists, government spokespersons and members of the media discussed the strategic impact of the media in comprehensive crisis management in a workshop hosted by the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies (APCSS) Dec. 14-16, 2010 in Jakarta, Indonesia.   HONOLULU – Eighty-seven senior military and civilian government leaders from 34 countries and territories graduated December 10 from the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies “Executive Course:  Advanced Security Cooperation” . Attending the regional security course were representatives from: Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Cameroon, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kiribati, Laos, Lebanon, Malaysia, Maldives, Micronesia, Mongolia, Nauru, Nepal, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Samoa, Singapore, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Tonga, United States, and Vietnam.  The six-week Executive Course focus is on building relationships among mid-career leaders and decision makers within the region.  Its curriculum [...]

VLADIVOSTOK, Russia – The Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies (APCSS) and the Maritime State University (MSU), Vladivostok, co-hosted a workshop focused on maritime security and regional cooperation in Northeast Asia in Vladivostok, Russia, Nov. 8-12, 2010.  The workshop aimed to increase shared understanding across the North Pacific region of the complexity and challenges associated with maritime security cooperation.  It brought together 40 officials and scholars from seven countries to engage in candid discussion of feasible, mutually acceptable regional collaborative opportunities to address shared challenges.  […]

DSCA director visits APCSS

Newly-appointed Director of Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) Vice Adm. William Landay visited APCSS Oct. 21 for an orientation of the Center provided by APCSS Director Lt. Gen. (Ret) E. P. Smith, faculty and staff. During the visit, Vice Adm. Landay toured APCSS, observed Director Smith welcoming  the Advanced Security Cooperation Course (ASC 10-2) in the auditorium,  and was briefed by staff and faculty in one of APCSS' six seminar rooms. Lt. Gen. Duane Thiessen, Commander, U.S. Marine Forces, Pacific visited the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies Sept. 16 for a tour and overview of the Center provided by APCSS Director Lt. Gen. (Ret.) E.P. Smith. During Thiessen's visit, Dir. Smith provided a full tour of the Center and intoduced him to Ambassador David Huebner, American ambassador to New Zealand, Samoa, and the Cook Islands and Ambassador C. Steven McGann, ambassador to the Republics of Fiji, Nauru, Kiribati, Tonga, and Tuvalu. The two ambassadors are at APCSS attending the "Maritime Security in the Pacific Island Region" workshop.
