Lieutenant Commander Ian Burgess

Lieutenant Commander Ian “BIO” Burgess came to the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies in July 2018 following his Department Head tour with the “Fighting Tigers” of Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Squadron EIGHT (VP-8) where he completed two deployments to the Pacific Theater and lead three detachments to the Republic of the Philippines.

A native of San Antonio, he reported for Naval Flight Officer training in Pensacola, FL in 2003 and earned his NFO Wings of Gold in April 2005.  Following initial P-3C FRS training, from 2005 to 2008, he served with the “Rangers” of Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron TWO (VQ-2) at NAS Whidbey Island, WA where he completed five EP-3-E deployments to the FOURTH, FIFTH and SIXTH Fleets and supported Department of State tasking in Incirlik, Turkey.  From 2008 to 2011, he served as an EP-3E Weapons and Tactics Instructors for Commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing TEN (CPRW-10) in Whidbey Island, WA.

In 2011, LCDR Burgess reported to Commander, Carrier Strike Group THREE where he completed one FIFTH Fleet deployment in support of Operations NEW DAWN and ENDURING FREEDOM.  Following that assignment, from 2012-2013, he attended the Naval Postgraduate School.  Upon graduation, in 2014, he returned to the “Pro’s Nest” at Patrol Squadron THIRTY (VP-30) as a P-3C/EP-3E FRS Instructor and served as the P-3C Training Director and Manpower Officer where he assisted in the development of the EP-3E AIRES, P-8A Poseidon and MQ-4 Triton courses of instruction.  In 2015, he was selected to transition to the P-8A Poseidon and reported to VP-8 in 2016 for his Department Head tour.

LCDR Burgess holds a Master of Business Administration degree in Financial Management from the Naval Postgraduate School where he received recognition as a distinguished graduate and an Outstanding Thesis.  He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Science/Management of Technology from Vanderbilt University.

His personal awards include the Air Medal (Five Awards), Navy Commendation Medal (Four Awards), Navy Achievement Medal, and various Unit awards and commendations.
