Major Tony Smith joined the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies in July 2022 as a part of the United States Army’s Broadening Opportunity Program. Maj. Smith arrived following graduation from the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island with a focus on Asia-Pacific affairs.
Originally from Newport, Kentucky he entered the Army in 2009 and received his commission from Officer Candidate School in Fort Benning, Georgia in 2010. Maj. Smith is a graduate of the Quartermaster Basic Officer Leadership Course in Fort Lee, Virginia. He transitioned to Civil Affairs in 2011 and graduated from the Army Special Operation Forces Captains Career Course in 2015.
Maj. Smith deployed in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM in 2011-2012 as a Civil Affairs Team Leader supporting the 172nd Infantry Brigade. He joined the Active Guard Reserve (AGR) Program in 2013 and served in a variety of assignments: Battalion Plans Officer for the 425th Civil Affairs Battalion, Encino, California; Operations Officer at the 351st Civil Affair Command Planning Team, Honolulu, Hawaii; Operations Officer for the 361st Civil Affairs Brigade, Kaiserslautern, Germany; and most recently at the U.S. Army Human Resources Command as the AGR Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Talent Manager.
His operational experience in the Asia Pacific region includes Civil Affairs support to the 8th Theater Sustainment Command located in Honolulu, Hawaii and integration of Army Reserve Civil Affairs teams throughout the region in various exercises in support of the United States Army Pacific Command’s Strategic Effects Directorate.
Maj. Smith holds a Master of Arts in Defense and Security Studies from the Naval War College awarded in 2022. He has a Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership from the University of Massachusetts Global and a Bachelor of Arts from Northern Kentucky University in Political Science and Speech Communication.
His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (Three Awards), Army Commendation Medal (Three Awards), Army Achievement Medal (Three Awards), Combat Action Badge, Parachutist Badge. and Air Assault Badge along with various Unit awards and commendations.
