Dr. Christopher Snedden teaches an elective in a recent APOC course.

(Honolulu) – Dr. Christopher Snedden, an expert on South Asia, recently joined the staff of the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies as a professor. As part of the faculty, Snedden delivers lectures and guides discussions for international Fellows taking part in the Center’s many education programs.

APCSS is a Department of Defense institute that addresses socio-economic, political, military, cultural and technological issues impacting the region’s and world’s evolving security environment. Military and civilian representatives, most from the United States and Asia-Pacific nations, participate in a comprehensive program of executive education, professional exchanges and outreach events, both in Hawaii and throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

Snedden brings to the Center more than 30 years of expertise on a region that comprises Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. His knowledge base includes the region’s international relations environment; strategic, policy and security matters; and culture and religion.

An Australian citizen, Snedden has worked as a South Asia expert for Australia’s Department of Defence Joint Intelligence Organisation, Canberra; Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Canberra; and the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre, Sydney.

The professor also served as an academic with three Australia universities, including Deakin University in Melbourne. While there, the university assigned him to the DoD Centre for Defence and Strategic Studies in Canberra where he lectured senior international military officers and civilians on Asia-Pacific issues and ran the year-long Master of Arts program in Strategic Studies.

Snedden completed his doctorate at La Trobe University in Melbourne in 2001. His thesis focused on ethnic, religious, historical and political issues associated with the beginning of the decades-long conflict in the Jammu/Kashmir region. He’s published a book on the topic titled “The Untold Story of the People of Azad Kashmir.” He has also published several essays and articles in a variety of professional journals.
